Tish Oney, vocalist, arranger, pianist, composer and Artistic Director of several internationally-touring productions including 'The Peggy Lee Project,' 'Tish Oney's Big Band Excursion,' 'Tish Oney's Swingin' Christmas, and her new symphony show, 'An Evening With Tish Oney,' completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Studies and Performance at The University of Southern California's renowned Thornton School of Music. Oney's third solo album,'Sweet Youth’ (recorded on the Blujazz label), attained international airplay on jazz, traditional pop and adult standard radio worldwide, and critical-acclaim, being named among the Top 5 Vocal Jazz Albums of 2011 by AllMusic.com's jazz writer Michael G. Nastos. 'Sweet Youth' features the legendary John Chiodini on electric and acoustic guitars performing Oney's original music and duo arrangements of jazz standards. 'The Peggy Lee Project,' a concert production resulting from Oney's dissertation research, features Oney's updated, contemporary jazz arrangements of original songs by Peggy Lee to the delight of both young and seasoned audiences. 'Tish Oney's Swingin' Christmas,' which debuted at the famous Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, features all-time favorite holiday music gift-wrapped in contemporary and classic jazz styles. 'Tish Oney's Big Band Excursion' highlights Oney's calling as a big band vocalist and features contemporary arrangements of classic and original jazz by award-winning arrangers Chris Walden, Joe Riposo and Jason Goldman. 'An Evening With Tish Oney,' Tish's solo piano/vocal show, appropriately entertains smaller, intimate venues, and her new symphony show by the same name will be produced on large stages nationwide. A highly successful "crossover" artist, Dr. Oney also tours as a lyric soprano soloist, performing oratorio and recitals.
Tish was featured as a big band/symphonic vocalist in the 2007 PBS-broadcast concert recorded at Galen Center in Los Angeles, "We Love Ella! A Tribute to the First Lady of Song." Also featured were international jazz stars Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Wynonna, Patti Austin, Take 6, Dave Koz and Monica Mancini. The evening concert was emceed by Quincy Jones and produced by Phil Ramone, who personally congratulated her after the concert, shaking hands and saying: "The future of this music is in very good hands..."
Oney's second CD, 'Dear Peg' (recorded on the Rhombus Records label) earned international recognition in WHLI Radio's Top 50 Releases of 2009. This historically important album honors the songwriting achievements of vocal jazz icon Peggy Lee and features former members of Lee's band including John Chiodini, guitar, Bill Watrous, trombone and Bob Leatherbarrow, vibes. The band also features L.A. jazz stars Kendall Kay, drums and Joel Hamilton, bass. Oney has performed and recorded with several noted jazz artists including Les Brown, Donald Byrd, John Chiodini, Roy McCurdy, Bill Watrous, Bill Cunliffe, Noel Freidline, Bob Rozario, Bob Sachs, Ray Brinker, Mark Sherman, Ken Wild, Alan Steinberger, Joel Hamilton, Kendall Kay, Bob Leatherbarrow, Michael Royal, Paul Beaudry, Joe Riposo, Steve Brown, Bill Harris, and George Reed, among others.
Tish maintains a very active touring and recording career. For the past several years Tish has continued to appear worldwide as a touring performer and recording artist. Tish has headlined at Earshot Jazz Festival (Kirkland, WA), The Dennis Bono Show at Sam's Town Casino (Las Vegas, NV), Syracuse Jazzfest (Syracuse, NY), Wilson Center for the Arts (Brookfield, WI), Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts (Schaumburg, IL), The Glen Ridge Performing Arts Center (Sarasota, FL), Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza (Thousand Oaks, CA), Chapman Cultural Center (Spartanburg, SC) and the Hawai'i Convention Center (Honolulu, HI), among other regional theaters and performing arts centers. She has performed at regional jazz hotspots from The Jazz Bakery and Charlie O's Jazz Club in Los Angeles to The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, South Carolina and Michael Feinstein's elite Park Avenue cabaret, Feinstein's at Loews Regency in New York.
A mainstay in the Los Angeles and New York jazz scenes, Tish has been lauded in the 2008 book "The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide" authored by jazz critic Scott Yanow. She has also been honored as The 2011-12 Robert G. Boehmler Visiting Artist at Ithaca College School of Music. A recipient of The Diane Warren Award, Dr. Oney earned a second initiation into national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda for her musical excellence. Dr. Oney earned her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Ithaca College. She continues to actively perform, record, compose, arrange, teach master classes and appear worldwide as a soloist in both jazz and classical circles. In addition to her touring and recording career, Tish serves as Director of Vocal Studies at University of South Carolina Upstate teaching Commercial Music.
