Bio
Dave Potter
Dave Potter is quickly becoming known as a formidable musician. In the midst of a musical and cultural landscape where opposing voices debate the future of jazz from internet soapboxes, Dave has spent much of the past several years focusing on unfiltered swing and excitement from behind the drum set. He lends this creative intensity to master percussionist Jason Marsalis, whom Dave has the unique privilege of accompanying as Marsalis leads his new quartet from the vibes chair. This long time association was first documented on 2009's "Music Update," Marsalis' first vibes album, which was awarded 4.5 stars by Downbeat magazine. Dave is also featured on Jason's current release, "In A World Of Mallets," which was released internationally on Basin Street Records in February 2013.
Prior to recording with Marsalis, Dave graduated from Florida State University in 2005. Upon graduation, he was chosen from a national pool of applicants to be a member of the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans. Unfortunately, the tragedy of hurricane Katrina temporarily ended his hopes for a career in Louisiana. In the spring of 2006, Dave was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Julliard Jazz Program in New York City. However, after several days of intense meditation he declined the offer and returned to Florida State University to explore further collaboration with his mentor, pianist Marcus Roberts. In addition to working closely with Roberts to develop unique strategies for teaching young jazz musicians, Dave logged several performances with Marcus' trio. He received his master’s degree in December, 2008 and quickly joined Marsalis for a busy touring schedule. In addition to extensive work with Marsalis and Roberts, Dave has performed with Eric Reed, Martin Bejerano, Marcus Belgrave, Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Wessell Anderson, Vincent Gardner, Russell Gunn, Fred Wesley, Takana Miyamoto, Lew Soloff, Greg Tardy, and many other notable artists.
Dave is now located in Atlanta where he maintains a busy teaching and performing schedule, along with ongoing national and international touring with Jason Marsalis. He can be heard on recent recordings by saxophonist Joe Jennings, bassist Will Goble, and saxophonist Miguel Alvarado, as well as the aforementioned Marsalis recordings.
