Bio

Justin Johnson born in Greenville S.C. January 7th 1992. He is the son of John & Pamela Johnson. His father John plays the Piano as well as the Trumpet. Growing up into a musical family Justin began not only playing music at a young age but singing in the choir his father directed at the many churches they would attend. The first instrument he began to play was the drum set taking after his older brother Sean Johnson. Justin began to play the Trumpet at age 11 and was a natural from day one. Classically trained at Hughes Middle school under the direction of Mrs. Jane Bauer he began auditioning for many honor bands placing in the top ten chairs every year. Continuing this trend well into high school his senior year he placed 2nd in the city of Greenville a major accomplishment for himself. Also during his senior year he was awarded a music scholarship to attend Benedict College located in Columbia South Carolina which in an HBCU ( Historically Black College or University)

Justin now attends Benedict College in Columbia South Carolina where he is a Music Performance major under the direction of Mr. Herman Jones Head Band Director. Prior to his college career Justin had not been exposed to many Jazz artists or even the genre of Jazz. All of this changed the night he met Craig Sorrells a local musician and trumpeter as well. Craig was the first to allow Justin to join him on stage at The Brown Street Club (now Jack & Diane’s) and from that point on Justin became enthused with Jazz and the musical world he had never seen before they’re friendship continues on to this day. Spending countless hours in the practice room he began to hone his craft and his musical abilities soon he began playing at different venues all across the city sitting in with everyone who would allow him the opportunity to do so. Eventually he ran into Wade Baker a nationally touring Jazz Trumpeter, Wade began to open Justin’s mind to another aspect of music often times giving him private lessons and instruction while he was in town. Justin has had the opportunity to play with various musicians such as Wade Baker, Marcus Anderson, Phillip Whack, Craig Sorrells, Jeff Sipe, and Grammy award winning Kofi Burbridge of The Tedeschi Trucks band to name a few. Today Justin now plays regularly with TJ Lazer & The New Detroits, as well as The Marcus King Band. Recently he began his own project Justin Johnson & Major 7th. This band is truly unique in its own way fusing together Jazz, Funk, Soul, with a taste of R&B. In January of 2014 he began working on his first album which is expected to be finished in the fall of 2014. Although he has accomplished many things during his young and exciting career the now 22 year old Justin realizes that this is only the beginning of a life full of musical endeavors.
